The Embassy of Japan is organizing a Cultural Seminar (lecture & panel discussion) titled "Cultural exchange between Japan and Singapore in globalised times".

Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) in Beppu, Japan. is offering scholarship opportunities to academically exceptional individuals to study at the university in 2009. Outlines of the scholarships are as follows:
1. Scholarship Benefits: All university fees, an allowance for living expenses, and airfare will be provided.

Charity Tea Gathering in aid of the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund

Chado Urasenke Tankokai Singapore Association is organizing a charity tea gathering with the theme "Wa Kei Sei Jyaku" on 16 Nov 2008 (Sun). The event is supported by the Embassy of Japan and the Japanese Association.
The Japanese traditional tea ceremonies in four different settings will be demonstrated by students of Singapore Polytechnic, Waseda Shibuya Senior High School, members of Japanese Association and Urasenke Singapore Association. Participants will get to sample 2 bowls of Japanese green tea and sweets. There will explanations in both Japanese and English. Proceeds will be donated to the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund, which helps needy students in Singapore.

"Gaiko Forum", first published in October 1988, is a monthly Japanese journal addressing important issues related to foreign affairs of Japan supported by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It seeks to present not only the viewpoints of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan but also a broad spectrum of analysis and wide-ranging exchange of views by scholars, journalists, commentators and opinion leaders in various fields. JUGAS Past Present Tan Jong Lek contributed an article on the ryugakusei policy of Japan.
How is the latest round of credit crisis going to affect the global markets
and Singapore’s economy? Hopefully through understanding the Singapore
residential market, our members can be better prepared to weather any
domino effects arising from the financial turmoil. Please come and join us
in our next JUGAS Talks scheduled on 11 October 2008 (Sat). We have the
privilege of inviting Associate Professor Lum Sau Kim of NUS and JUGAS Hon Treasurer Mr Loong
Chee Yuh as our speakers.
Associate Professor Lum will share with us an overview of the Residential
Market in Singapore, focusing on how the market is structured and the
linkages between different housing sectors. In addition, she will discuss
the key factors that determine the housing prices. Mr Loong Chee Yuh will
share his experience on a 4-month, 10,000 miles sail across the oceans as
part of the Clipper Round-The-World Yacht Race. He is going to tell you
what makes him take the plunge, and also explain why you should do
something crazy with your life at least once. Details of the event are as

National Day Awards for members Tan Chor Kiat, Ng Keok Boon and Koh Peng Chong

JUGAS are proud that the following members are awarded the National Day Awards 2008 by the President of Singapore for their outstanding achievement in their service to the nation:
(a) COL Tan Chor Kiat - Public Administration Medal (Bronze) (Military)
COL Tan is the Chief of Staff, Headquarters Singapore Combined Arms Division/Infantry, Singapore Armed Forces.
He graduated from National Defence Academy in 1987 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
(b) COL (VOL) Ng Keok Boon - Public Administration Medal (Bronze) (Military)
COL (VOL) Ng is the Deputy Commander (Gun Echelon Command Post), Division Artillery Headquarters, Singapore Armed Forces.
He graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1982 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
(c) Koh Peng Chong - Public Administration Medal (Bronze)
Mr Koh is a Deputy Director of Ministry of Defense.
He graduated from Tsukuba University in 1991 with Masters in Information Science.
